THE WHEELS ON THE BUS

by Craig Castleberry

Cast

Ben (Always positive and is not a Christian)

Julie (Always negative and IS a Christian)

Jonathan (Shy and is the peacemaker and is NOT a Christian)

Beth (Always depressed and IS a Christian)

Chuck (Outsider and keeps to himself...Not SURE if he is a Christian)

Theme: Missions are right across the street if we will only look around us.

Scripture: ...The harvest is so great, but the workers are so few. So pray to the Lord, Who is in charge of the harvest; ask Him to send out more workers for His fields. Matthew 9: 37 & 38

Opening Scene: Several youth are on a school field trip traveling on a bus. The bus is rowdy and the youth are driving the bus driver crazy. Two seats are on one side of the aisle one in front of the other where Ben, Julie, Jonathan and Beth sit. Across the aisle, Chuck sits alone.

(All youth are talking loudly...laughing loudly...singing “The wheels on the bus go ‘round and ‘round.”)

Ben: I have been waiting for weeks to go on this field trip. I LOVE the planetarium.

Julie: Why don’t you just go outside tonight? You can go see stars anytime. What a waste of a day.

Beth: I know it. And when we get back, we have homework... two page essay on WHAT we learned at the planetarium.

Jonathan: Yeah (saying it quietly), but that is only if we are loud and rowdy on the bus.

Julie: (Laughing) OOOPS, then make that a 4 page essay because this bus is rocking!

ALL: GREAT! (Sarcastically)

Beth: Looks like we will all suffer with all the big mouths on THIS bus.

Ben: If we were like that kid over there, we would all get a bonus.

Julie: He never talks to anybody.

Jonathan: I think his name is Chuck. He barely lives in our school district.

Julie: Oh, the OTHER side of town. Yuck.

Beth: I think he visited my church once. He was quiet then, too.

Ben: Did you meet him?

Beth: Are you kidding? Our group was hanging out together and he never came up and talked to us. He’s just not very friendly.

Ben: So if he came over here right now, would you talk to him? I mean I don’t go to church, but I thought people at church always welcomed other people no matter who they are.

Julie: Well, I go to church and have all my life. I love going and doing mission trips.

Jonathan: What do you do on those trips?

Julie: Let's see, we go tell people about how good Jesus is to us and sometimes we sing and we go to cool places like new malls and beaches and different churches and more malls. Did I mention that we go to malls?

Jonathan: Do you do those things here?

Beth: What? Missions? Like tell people about Jesus at school and in our own town?

Julie: ummmmm Not....really.

Ben: Wait a minute, let me get this straight. You travel hundreds of miles to do missions. But, when you are here at home, you don’t tell anyone at school or anywhere else?

Julie: ummmmmm

Beth: That is NOT true. If someone came to our church and asked me about Jesus, I would definitely tell them to go (Pauses to think)... talk to the pastor.

Jonathan: Julie, have you ever helped someone become a Christian?

Julie: Not yet, I am waiting for a really good time.

Ben: You know, I am not a Christian, but it seems that you girls only act the part. I wonder if the people you see on the mission trips and talk to are seeing the real you. Jonathan, let’s go over and sit with Chuck. If he is a Christian, I might just listen to him if HE told me about Jesus. I often wondered why you went to church. I guess you really do need it every week. Worse than I thought.

Ben: (Moving with Jonathan toward Chuck) Is your name Chuck?

Chuck: ummm yeah? (Begins talking to Ben and Jonathan)

Julie: Well, at least WE’RE going to heaven.

Beth: (Bows her head...convicted)

THE END

Study Questions

Is your witness a daily thing?

Are you more at ease witnessing hundreds of miles away than in your own community?

CHALLENGE: Find some way that you can AT LEAST let people know where you go to church so you always have a way to get your foot in the door.

Example: I have to get to my church here in a minute, they really need me tonight. Or...My friends are meeting up at the church later this week so I may not be able to make it. But, you can join us!”

If you let them know some of your schedule, they may want what you already have!
