The Tool Box
by Don Watson
Scripture: "We have different gifts, according to the grace given us..." Romans 12:6
Theme: We all have different gifts and abilities.
Scene: [Don should be wearing overalls or something like a repairman would wear and maybe a cap as well. Jim can be wearing anything. This script should be done with adults, but with a children's audience.]
Don: Hey Mr. Jim! How are you doing? I hope you don't mind but I might have to leave early tonight. You see, I have some fixing up to do around the house and I am sort of anxious to get started. In fact, I carried my tool box with me. This is my special tool box. Do you want to see what's in it?
Jim: I guess, but we need to get started so we can go outside.
Don: Well, let's see...I have this watcha-ma-callit (Pulls out measuring tape). I don't know what it does, but it is fun to play with. (Pulls out the tape and rolls it back in).
Jim: (Surprised Don does not know the names of the tools in his own tool box.) Don, that is called measuring tape.
Don: Oh, that's what those numbers are for! Well, I also have my spark maker. (Pulls out a pair of wire cutters).
Jim: Those are wire cutters! Why do you call them a spark maker?
Don: Because every time I cut electrical wires, sparks fly and my hair really stands up and I get a tingling sensation all over. It is really kind of neat.
Jim: Before you cut electrical wires, you do cut off the power don't you?
Don: I did not know I supposed to do that. You know, that is what I like about church. I am always learning something. It seems I also have my favorite hammer and of course, my map.
Jim: I can understand the hammer. But, what do you need a map for?
Don: Oh, it's the map to show how to get to the emergency room.
Jim: (Confused) Why do you need a map to show you how to get to the emergency room?
Don: I can tell you have never seen me swing a hammer before. In fact, I call this my praying hammer!
Jim: (Interested) I have never heard of such a thing. What in the world are you talking about?
Don: Every time I start swinging it, people start praying. And I found that praying really works. The last time someone held a nail for me, they did a lot of praying and you know after they helped me, the doctors said they would never use their hand again. But, the last I heard, the doctors were saying they would have full use of their hand in 6 months!
Jim: Have you ever thought that you might not have the gift for working with tools?
Don: (Head Down) Actually, I have been thinking about it a lot since my wife told me there are 5 words that scare her a lot.
Jim: What are they?
Don: Honey, I will fix that.
Jim: Well, Don...Don't be sad because (Talking to audience now) Romans 12:6 says we all have gifts that differ according to the grace given to us. So rather than feeling sad about the gifts you do not have, pray to God that He will reveal the gifts you do have!
Don: Jim, guess what?
Jim: What?
Don: I feel better already!
