The Door to Christmas

Scene I

by Craig Castleberry

THE FACTS:  This 3-Scene drama was used for a Christmas Eve Service. Each skit was written by a different staff member and focused on a door.  This door was the front door of a typical family's house around Christmas.  The theme throughout these three scenes centered around Christ and the opportunity that an open door brings to someone's life and in their hearts.  Our set was a little more elaborate with a living room complete with chairs, end table, lamp, fireplace with a small fan and (Flashlighted) red paper behind logs for a roaring-fire look.  The door was to one side of the stage.  This was a gift from our staff to our church family and well worth the effort.  As each family left the service, they received an ornament in the shape of a door knocker, a reminder of the message brought.  This could be presented and changed to meet many needs and could even be more general than seasonal if you change the visitors and a few of the lines.  Feel free to use it as your needs require.  This first scene can be used with the other scenes, or can stand alone as a one scene skit.

THEME:  In the middle of busy lives, some opportunities may stare us in the eyes to share the Gospel.

Scripture: “But my life is worth nothing unless I use it for doing the work assigned me by the Lord Jesus—the work of telling others the Good News about God’s wonderful kindness and love.” Acts 20:24

Cast: Sam (Father) / Lucy (Mother) / Ben (Son) / Ruthy (Daughter) / Reed (Neighbor)

Scene:  Family in the living room decorating the Christmas tree.  Father is reading the paper relaxed in a chair.  Wife is helping children hang ornaments.  Christmas music is playing softly.

(Ruthy looking at her mom getting ready to ask yet another question.)

Lucy:    Ok, put that one a little toward the back of the tree, it needs some back there.

Ruthy:   Mom, why are we only getting only one gift this Christmas?  We’ve never done THAT before.

Lucy:  Your dad’s company is cutting back on a lot of things that they have always had before including bonuses.  When they cut back, we also have to cut back.

Ben:     Ruthy, just hang ornaments and stop worrying.  You got a Sally Spill-Drink last year and when is the last time SHE spilled ANYTHING?

Lucy:    Oh yeah?  I was gonna play with her in just a minute.

Ben:     (Laughing) Yeah, right!

Sam:     (Talking while still reading the paper) You two stop right now.  Where is your Christmas spirit?  There was a time you didn’t get any presents.

Ruthy:   When?

Sam:     (Pausing to come up with some kind of an answer) ummmm  Before you were born!

(Ben and Lucy both laughing suddenly stop as someone knocks at the door.  Sam goes to the door and opens it.)

Sam:     Reed!  Come on in, I haven’t seen you since the last time I saw you!

Reed:   Hi Sam, I everybody! (Everyone says “Hi”)  Wow, now THAT is a nice tree!  What tree farm did you find that one at?!?!

Sam:     J.C. Penney...5 years ago. (Family responds with laughter, but Reed does not miss a beat like he did not hear what he said) (Mother and kids continue decorating)

Reed:   Well, that’s nice.  Remind me to go there next year.  Hey, I brought this for you to put under your tree, but you can open it mow.

Sam:     A gift for us?

Reed:   Well, more for you, but sure.  Go ahead, open it!

Sam:     This SURE is HEAVY!

Reed:   I’ll give you one hint.

Sam:     What’s that? (Opening the heavy gift)

Reed:   It’s not a fruit cake! (Laughs at his own joke)

Sam:     (Pauses and gazes at the chainsaw)  It’s a chainsaw.

Reed:   I thought you would like it!

Sam:     This is MY chainsaw, I loaned it to you a year ago.

Reed:   Well, I wanted to give you SOMETHING.  Now you don’t have to go to J.C. Penney anymore!

Sam:     (Giving it back to Reed) Merry Christmas to you, Reed.  But, my dad bought a new one last spring and gave me his old one.  You keep it.  Merry Christmas!

Reed:   WOW!  No foolin’?  Thanks, Sam!  Thanks everybody!  I’m gonna go tell Francis!  Ummm That’s my wife.  I’m gonna go and make you the best fruit cake ever!

Lucy:    Merry Christmas, Reed. (Kids join in and say the same.  Reed salutes them all.)

(Reed exits and Sam stands there with a smile on his face.)

Ben and Ruthy: Dad, can we go look at Christmas lights tonight?

Sam:     I--- think there is a good chance of that.

Lucy:    That was a very nice thing you did, Sam.

Sam:     It wasn’t much, but it sure made his day didn’t it?  Do you know where he goes to church?

Lucy:    No, I don’t think they go to church anywhere.

Sam:     I wish I had asked him.  The next time I see him, I will.

Lucy:    (Laughingly) When?  Next year when he brings back your tire chains?

(Sam puts his hands on his hips, looks down and shakes his head)

Study Questions

Take 5:   Every opportunity to share Christ does not come knocking at our door.  Can you think of a time recently that you have missed an opportunity to at least invite someone to church?...or to tell someone how good God has been to you?
