Living Sacrifice
by Donna Thorne
There are three options for Living Sacrifice with three different angles on this subject. Here is OPTION ONE...
OPTION ONE:
Scripture: "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship." Romans 12:1
All of these will work well with someone singing Steven Curtis Chapman's "Moment Made For Worshipping" at the end--even if just the final chorus.
Cast: Two characters either male or female.
Scene Opens: (First person: Enters reading.)
Chris: "Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God…" (Chris looks up, thinking.) "…offer your bodies as a living sacrifice. Hmm. A living sacrifice." (Then looks around. Shrugs.) "Okay, but if I'm going to be a sacrifice, I'm going to need an altar." (Chris gets a few chairs together, uses a bench on platform if available--anything make-shift and handy. Lies down across "alter".) "I'm glad God wants a living sacrifice."
Torry: (Enters with a list. Sees Chris on altar, thinks it's strange, but doesn't comment.) "Hello, Chris, you're just the person I wanted to see. I'm wondering if you would like to come out Saturday and help us with the work day at church."
Chris: "Sorry. I won't be able to make it."
Torry: "Oh, ok, well, (consults list) could you maybe teach the fourth grade Sunday School class this quarter?"
Chris: "I'm afraid not."
Torry: "Hmm. Let's see. Mrs. Jones needs her deck repaired."
Chris: "Nope."
Torry: "We need help in the kitchen on Wednesday nights."
Chris: "Uh-uh."
Torry: (Getting a little desperate) "Could you sing in the choir?"
Chris: "I don't see how."
Torry: (Not angry, but exasperated) Tosses list on floor in front of Chris. "Do you think you could pick up a piece of paper and put it in the trash?"
Chris: (Makes feeble attempt to reach it.) "I guess not, sorry."
Torry: (In disbelief) "Would you mind telling me why you won't help anyone out, here?"
Chris: "Hey, this isn't my idea. (with superiority) I'm being a living sacrifice. This is my alter. God told me to."
Torry: (Smiling.) "I don't think this is exactly what He had in mind."
Chris: (Sits up, interested.) "No? Well then, what does it mean?"
Torry: "Since His Spirit is living within you, you have certain gifts for serving Him. Using those gifts to serve others at home, work, church, and everywhere you go involves sacrifice. You sacrifice your time, talents, energy, money-- all you have and all you are to help people because of your love for them and for God."
Chris: (Picks up list.) "So I have to do everything on this list?"
Torry: "No. Why don't you take this home, pray about it and see what God puts in your heart to do?"
Chris: "Oh, ok." (Leaving together.) "That (bench, chair) was getting pretty hard, anyway." (Holding back like it is in pain and stiff)

Study Questions
Do we expect more from others than we do from ourselves?
When we know we have an ability that could serve God and we hide it, is that considered disobedience? Can it be taken away?
If you refuse to be used by God, will God accomplish His plan without you?
How have you sacrificed this week and when you did, was your spirit a sweet one or a sour one? Do you have a witness? Check your attitude, see if you see what others see in you. (Ouch, that MIGHT hurt)
