A
Holy Night
by

Scripture:
After Jesus was born in
Bethlehem
in
Judea
, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to
Jerusalem
and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We
saw his star in the east and have come to worship him."
Matthew 2: 1-2
Props: Biblical costumes for 3
people. Two are to look common.
Melchior’s costume is to look more royal,
yet with a bag and staff. A smaller
pouch may also be used to hold coins.
Scene Opens: Two people dressed in
Biblical robes looking somewhat like shepherds walk onto stage together.
One may have a staff. They
walk to center stage.
Kabal:
I have never seen anything like it!
Topar: Neither have I, Kabal.
Many have tried to explain it, but they do not know what it means.
Kabal: Some think it may be the end
of times
Topar: But, others have said it may
be the beginning.
Kabal: (Thinking as hand rubs chin)
Hmmm...I
choose beginning.
Topar: (Quickly responding) Me
too!
Melchior: (Walking up to Kabal and
Topar from side stage and stands between them facing audience)
I know it is late at night, but could you tell me where I might
find some water.?
Kabal: I only know of one well and
it is not very close, but it is on the outskirts of town.
Topar: But, the water is clean and
you will not disturb anyone.
Melchior: You have been most kind.
Please accept this as a gift. (He
pulls out a coin from a pouch) I
have traveled far and for what seems like countless days and nights.
Topar:
Many thanks. I hope you find
the end of your journey very soon. Where
are you going?
Melchior: I do not know, but I feel
I am close. I only follow the star.
I have two friends who are close behind me.
They will catch up soon. We
all need water.
Kabal: Look!
The beams from the star are stretching down from the sky
Topar: This is truly an amazing
night! There is something in the
air. Sir, may I ask your name?
Melchior: My name is Melchior...And
I must go! The star requests my
presence, thanks be to God! Goodbye,
my new friends. God be with you.
(Exits off stage quickly looking up as if to watch the star)
Topar and Kabal: Goodbye.
Thank you for the gift!
Topar: I am telling you, there is
something in the air. It seems like a holy night.
Kabal: Who would travel so far not
knowing where he is going?
Topar: I suppose someone who was
not satisfied with where they were.
Kabal: Ahh!
A step of faith!
Topar: Which became a journey it
seems. If only I had that kind of
faith (Looking at the coin given by Melchior).
I have never seen a coin like this.
Kabal: Let’s follow him!
We too can have faith! All
it takes is a first step.
Topar: If we follow the star, we
will find him. Melchior?
Yes, and whatever is at the end of his journey...or
Whomever. (Both look up and begin
to walk off stage still talking) This
coin is from a far away place!
Kabal: May I have it?
Topar: We will share.
It is yours tonight and mine tomorrow.
Kabal: Very well! Ahh...We
have taken a first step!!
The End
Study
Questions:
Although the wise men could not see
God, they still followed the Light God gave them Was
it a step of faith to follow this star?
How far would you follow a star?
Topar and Kabal only talked about the star. It
took a visit from Melchior to get them excited about it.
Did Melchior’s faith make a difference in Topar’s
and Kabal’s lives?
They only talked about it. It took
someone involved to get them involved.
How important is it to have people actively
showing and sharing their faith?
Who will you talk to about the Light this Christmas? Who
will follow you as you follow Christ? Will
you make a difference in the life of someone who is lost?
