The Christmas Delivery

by Craig Castleberry

Scripture: "In everything I did, I showed you that by this kind of hard work we must help the weak, remembering the words the Lord Jesus himself said: 'It is more blessed to give than to receive.' " Acts 20:35

Opening Scene: Three children are decorating a Christmas Tree at home. Rudy and Janet are brother and sister. Susan is a friend over to visit. Susan is not dressed as nicely as Janet and Rudy.

SCENE I

Rudy: I can't wait for Christmas to get here!

Janet: I know it! All the family comes to our house and we have lots of good food and gifts to open!

Rudy: Hey, they are my family too! Susan, what do you do for Christmas?

Susan: Not much. My daddy works, even on holidays because the boss does not give a Christmas bonus. So, if my daddy works on those days, he will get some gifts for us with the extra money!

Janet: Oh. That...doesn't sound very fun. Does your mom work, too?

Susan: She stays at home and cooks for us. She seems sad, but I don't know why.

Rudy: Maybe it is because your dad has to work and not be at home.

Susan: That makes us all sad. It never seems like we are a family. We are never all together. (Pause as they are still decorating the tree) I think I better go, I think my mom is cooking supper for us. I had a good time and thanks for the cheese balls. They were REALLY good!

Rudy and Janet: We are glad you could come over.

Rudy: You are our BEST backdoor neighbor!

Janet: You mean our only backdoor neighbor,

Rudy: Yeah, that too! (Smiling really big) Goodnight, Susan.

Susan: I will see you tomorrow maybe.

(Susan exits the room leaving Janet and Rudy who are brother and sister) (Lights Down on the scene)

SCENE II

(Lights back up on same scene) (Janet is just sitting next to the Christmas looking gloomy)

Rudy: What is wrong with you? Mom went to the store. I THINK she is getting some more GIFTS!

Janet: We need to do something/

Rudy: What, tell her to forget it? You are crazy!

Janet: No, I mean Susan. Rudy, she has never let me in her house, but I know they don't have much. She wears almost the same thing every single day!

Rudy: I wish I could.

Janet: We know.

Rudy: Should we get her a gift? We have NO money! Any bright ideas?

Janet: Yes, it requires sacrifice.

Rudy: I'm out. Who is next?

Janet: Stop it. Susan is a good friend and she deserves to have a good Christmas, too.

Rudy: OK, then what is the plan?

Janet: OK We each get a gift we can open on Christmas Eve and that gift is something we always know what it is.

Rudy: And?

Janet: So, we just tell everyone we will open our gifts in the morning and not open them that night.

Rudy: And? WAIT! Let me guess, when everyone is in bed, we sneak out and take those two gifts and sneak them over to Susan's house and leave them at their front door.

Janet: Right!

Rudy: WHAT?!?!? You are CRAZY! My Christmas Eve gift will probably be a new electronic game. I like that game. I want that game.

Janet: Like you don't have enough already.

Rudy: OK I'm in.

Janet: YES! My gift is going to be a nice new make-up case with make-up in it! She will love that!

Rudy: Yeah, you know, we will get so many other gifts, we won't even miss them. It may be the best gift they get.

(Lights Down) (Scene Closes)

SCENE III

(Scene opens with some added gifts under the tree.) (Both children are in their night clothing and winter coats and are sneaking to the tree, but do not see each other as they are back up and bump into each other. They both jump as they are startled and Rudy puts his hand over his sister's mouth so she doesn't scream)

Rudy: It's only me!

Janet: You scared the stocking off of me! (In a loud whisper)

(Both reach down and get their gifts)

Janet: Let's go.

Rudy: Susan's younger brother should love this gift.

Janet: Hurry!

(They exit and lights go down)

(15 seconds pass as time lapse is simulated)

(Light go back up as both children enter giving high-fives and celebrating their great delivery!)

Janet: I can't wait to call tomorrow and see what Janet got for Christmas! I know she will be excited!

Rudy: You know what?

Janet: What?

Rudy: I think this is the best Christmas yet and Christmas day isn't even here yet.

Janet: It does feel good to give doesn't it?

Rudy: I never thought it would feel this good.

(Janet gives her big brother a hug. Rudy freezes and finally hugs her back.)

Rudy: OK, that was your one hug for next year.

Janet: Funny. Let's get to our rooms before we get caught! Goodnight, Rudy.

Rudy: Goodnight, baby sis...Merry Christmas.

(Lights down)
