ANOREXIA SPIRITOSA
Submitted by Donna Thorne
Note: This skit was written for a ladies' retreat and presented by those who had written it. Donna Thorne was one who had brought this together and submitted it to this site. This is an excellent way to bring quality to your next retreat, especially dealing with the word of God.
Scripture: "Get wisdom, get understanding; do not forget my words or swerve from them." Proverbs 4:5
Theme: We need the Word of God.
Setting: "Bread of Life" Café. A group taking a lunch break from work enters the café.
Speaker 1: Oh, I love this place! These people have the best bread.
Speaker 2: I love it, too. I've never had a bad experience here.
Group: general agreement, positive comments. "I'm starving", "It smells wonderful in here!" etc. All sit down at large table; waitron comes out bringing Bibles for menus; greets everyone (Bible study leader, S.S. teacher, etc. works well as waitron for analogy).
Waitron (A Robotic Waiter): I'll be back in a minute to take your orders.
Speaker 3: (enters late) "Hi, everyone. Sorry I'm late."
Speaker 1: What happened to you? You left when we did.
Speaker 3: Yeah, well, I almost didn't come.
Speaker 2: (Incredulous) Why not?
Speaker 3: Well…(looks at menu disparagingly)
Waitron: (re-enters) Are you all (y'all,) ready to order?
Speaker 1: Yes, I am. I'd like the Philippians chapter 2, please. (To group) Humble pie. Hard to swallow, but very nutritious (flexes muscle).
Speaker 2: I think I'll have some Ezra today. It's been a long time. I'm not sure I even remember what it tastes like.
Speaker 4: I would like some Psalm 139, please. I need a little pick-me-up today.
Speakers 5-? Order their favorite passages, giving reasons if desired. Someone could even order "Hezekiah," and the waitron could say, "Do you mean Zechariah?" and have person sheepishly (embarrassed) agree.
Waitron: (to speaker 3) Are you ready to order?
Sp. 3: (bored) Do you have any specials today?
W: We sure do! How about a triple-decker Romans with a side of Leviticus?
Speaker 3: That sounds way too heavy! I'm really not even hungry. What can I have that's on the lighter side?
W: How about some Philippians?
Sp. 3: No, that dish is so unrealistic. What's with all that rejoicing, anyway? (press fingers in cheeks, making dimples). "No, thank you."
W: I Corinthians 13?
Sp. 3: Too sweet.
W: Song of Solomon?
Sp 3: Too spicy!
W: l Chronicles?
Sp 3: Dry.
W: Revelation?
Sp. 3: Now, there's a very confusing dish. I never know if I'm eating it the right way. Hey, I know! Do you have any "Nostradamus? I've never tried it, but I hear it's a very interesting dish.
W: No, I'm afraid we don't have that on the menu.
Sp3: Well, I've had everything on this menu a million times. I guess I'll just pass.
Sp 1: Not again! You do this every time. When was the last time you actually ate anything?
Sp 3: Don't get your bananas in a bunch. I figure I have a lot of reserve. (pinch "dingle-dangle" under arm) After all, I have been eating ever since I was a little kid.
Sp 2: But that won't last forever. You have to eat all your life to be healthy.
Sp 3: Which is why I go to church every Sunday. You know, my pastor, (Pastor ___________) is a regular gourmet chef! He slices, he dices, he chills and grills, he serves it up on a platter, and feeds us with a spoon! (kiss fingertips) Delicious!!
Sp 4: You can't just eat once a week! What do you eat the rest of the time?
Sp 3: Well, I don't. I used to try fixing my own meals at home, but even though I have the same ingredients, it just never seems to turn out the same way for me as it does when pastor cooks it up.
Sp 5: Don't you get hungry?
Sp 3: Well,I used to. I remember years ago, I could hardly wait for the next meal. I would even snack between meals. But somehow, I got so busy that I started skipping meals. It bothered me at first, but the more I missed meals, the more I lost my appetite. Weird, huh? Anyway, I think I've grown all I need to, so I figure I don't need to eat as much now.
Sp 2: You're going to get sick.
Sp 3: Actually, speaking of getting sick, just being around food is making me sick. I think I need to get some fresh air. Excuse me. (Stands and begins walking out). I'll be outside. I'll see you when you finish.
Sp 3 (Collapses after a few steps)
Sp 1 (Grabs Bible.) "We've got to get her some food!" (Rushes to her, kneeling beside her with an open Bible.)
Someone sings a song about how we need God's Word:
"The Word Was" by Sara Groves or the chorus, "Word of God Speak."
-or- "I Miss My Time With You" by Larnelle Harris
Study Questions
How important is studying God's word?
Is that the job of someone else in your life? Your Sunday School teacher? Your pastor? Your friend? Has it ever been your responsibility?
How often do you read your Bible?
Do you have a friend you could share a thought with about a devotion each day concerning scripture?
Remember an event that God spoke to you through His word.
