WHAT ARE YOU DOING?
by Craig Castleberry
Scripture: But be sure to fear the LORD and serve Him faithfully with all your heart; consider what great things he has done for you.
I Samuel 12:24
Theme: No task is too great or too small as we all serve our Father in heaven.
Props: Broom, a Sign (With the name of your church)
Scene: A hallway at church. A man is sweeping as another church member walks up.
Sweeper: (Whistling or Humming)
Lady: Hey, what are you doing?
Sweeper: (Looking at his broom, holds it like a barbell and lifts) I am working out, can’t you see?
Lady: Ha Ha Funny (As he goes back to his sweeping with a grin) Really, why are you doing that?
Sweeper: The floor was dirty and I told the pastor I would volunteer.
Lady: You have got to be kidding me. I know what you do for a living. You are upper management for a Fortune 500 corporation. Why in the WORLD would you be doing this?
Sweeper: (Stops his sweeping to talk to the lady) Do you remember last week in the announcements when it asked for volunteers to clean on certain days?
Lady: No, not really.
Sweeper: Well, it was there and when I went to see if they needed anymore help, the pastor told me that no one signed up. I asked him who has been. He said that HE has been doing it.
Lady: Oh. So, you are doing it to help him.
Sweeper: No, actually I am doing it for the same reason he was doing it. I am serving the Lord... sometimes, even when it seems to be below others.
Lady: (Ducks her head) I had no idea.
Sweeper: I just want my pastor to be fresh and rested and ready to preach the gospel! To think that my helping at the church could even make a difference on Sunday morning is most gratifying to me!
Lady: I guess I never realized how one job can affect so many others...even something like sweeping. Well, do you have another broom?
Sweeper: You got here just in time. My 2 hour shift is just over, you can have my broom. The choir room still needs some work. (Smiling)
Lady: (Also Smiling) I’ll get right to it! I can’t wait to hear the sermon this Sunday.
Sweeper: With all this sweeping, I am sure it will be incredible!

Remind me daily of how much you loved me on a cross and how much You still love me today, and how much more You will love me tomorrow. Let my heart be Your heart, my thoughts Your thoughts and my hands Your hands. Let me never refuse an opportunity to serve you more faithfully each and every day! Thank you, Father...Amen.
