The Door to Christmas

Scene III

by Darien Gabriel

Christmas music (“White Christmas” would go with painting picture of snow on ground or maybe a Powerpoint slide of snow scene) playing, mom is trying (without much success) to hang stockings by herself.  Kids are in another room.  Dad is watching SportsCenter in another room.

(Soft knock at the door)

Mom:    Will someone get the door?

(No response.)

(Another soft knock at the door)

Mom:    I’m trying to hang these stockings.  Can someone PLEEEEEESE get the      door?!!

(Another soft knock)

Mom:    (While still wrestling with stockings.  Door is still just an annoyance.) I can’t believe they are still at it!  (Children come racing each other to get the door.)  Look how late it is, too.  What could they be here for?

(Son unlocks and opens door slightly peeking through with innocent curiosity.  The sister’s head is peeking out underneath, trying to see.  Both react to blast of ice cold wind.)

Mom:    (Still focused on stockings, asks without looking at the door)  Who’s at the door, honey?

Ben:    Uhhhh… a man and women dressed in Easter pageant costumes.

Mom:    Oh, that’s nice…

Dad starts toward the door to see what the commotion is all about.

Lucy:    …and there’s a donkey!

Mom:    (Startled out of her stocking project, drops stuff and heads for the door; dad comes in and sees the look on her face and that she’s heading for the door.  He instinctively goes to the door, too, now noticing his kids’ excitement at the door)

Dad:    Kids!  Who’s at the door? Open the door!

Kids throw open the door in an overly energetic fashion and then freeze (and shiver) in confusion as they realize their guests are gone.

Mom:    Where are they?  (suddenly realizes kids are probably just playing around) Oh… that wasn’t funny, kids!

Ben:    Mom, we weren’t kidding!  They were really here!

Mom looks skeptical.

Lucy:    Yeah, the donkey, too!

Mom:    Oh, they were probably just carolers from the church down the street.

Dad:    (Looking at snow on sidewalk)  What’s this in the snow?

Lucy:    It’s the donkey’s footprints!

Ben:    And look, here are the man’s footprints!

Mom:    (Starting to realized she might have messed up) I thought you said there was a woman, too.

Ben:    There was!  The man was leading her away on the donkey when we opened the door.

Lucy:    Yeah, she looked like she was about to have a BIG baby ANY minute, too!

Dad:    I guess we were too busy to notice we had a guest in need. (walking back to the TV in the other room; mom heads back to the stockings feeling guilty but quickly going back to the stockings; kids standing at the door together)

Lucy:    I wish we could have helped them.  They looked like they really needed us.

Ben:    Or maybe we needed them.

Scripture:  “Look!  Here I stand at the door and knock.  If you hear me calling and open the door, I will come in, and we will share a meal as friends.”
