School of Prayer

by Craig Castleberry

Scripture: Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the saints. Ephesians 6:17-18

Theme: Prayer

Props: Notepad, Pen, and Bible, small table, chair

Opening Scene: Student at the lunch table with a small Bible and taking notes.

Susan:      [Walking up to Neil] Hi Neil, is that a Bible?

Neil:        Yes, my Bible actually. Or sword of the Spirit, take your pick.

Susan:     Wow, I thought those weren't allowed since prayer has been banned on campus.

Neil:        [Looks around to see if anyone is watching] Well, no one told me anything about it.

Susan:     Anyway, I guess you saw the latest news about the tragedy at school.

Neil:        Yes I did, and that is why I am here right now. Why should we wait until something tragic happens in school to        pray to God?

Susan:     You're right! Why do we expect God to take care and watch over us here if we don't allow our students to talk     to him every day?

Neil:         Exactly! Have you also noticed that the more we take prayer out of schools, the more these tragic things take          place?

Susan:     You know, I never even thought about that, but you are right.

Neil:        And I don't think God is plotting against us since we have removed prayer from schools. But, let's face it...The absence of God in any part of our lives is an invitation for sin to take control.

Susan:      Plus, it isn't just schools, it is anywhere.

Neil:         It is downright depressing and it can get you down, [Neil holds up his Bible] However, THIS will always help.     All the textbooks in the world can't match up to this one book! [Stand up and begins to walk offstage with Susan.]

Susan:      It is still the #1 best-seller, you know...

Neil:        OF ALL TIME!

Susan:     Maybe some day we will be able to pray at school...

Neil:        Or at least our children will someday.

Susan:     OUR children?

Neil:        I mean whenever you get married or I get married. I mean not at the same time, like to each other...I mean...

Susan:     [Laughing out loud almost off stage with Neil]

Neil:        Stop it! You know what I meant!

Study Questions

A Democrat from Ohio was quoted... "A Congress that allows God to be banned from our schools while our schools can teach about cults, Hitler and even devil worship is wrong, out of touch, and needs some common sense." Representative James Traficant

Where is our country headed? Is God still an important part of our culture?

Was our country founded on Christian principles? Is this a Christian nation? Would someone from another country know that this was a Christian nation if they walked into our schools for the first time...into our movie theaters...our rock concerts...our homes?

Could prayer make a difference in the way our country lives?

Often I think about our troops overseas and our law enforcement here. Men and women are dying for us every day. What are we doing to make that sacrifice worth it?  We should be so very thankful for them.

Then that leads us to a bigger question. What are we doing to show our thanks to a Savior who gave up His life for us? Are we standing up for what is right? Are we afraid to take His Word into schools and other places? Your name was on that cross, but by the grace of God, it was the body of Christ that took the nails...Praise God.
