A Work of Art

by Craig Castleberry

Scripture:  For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--His eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.  Romans 1:20

Theme:  We don't need to see God to know He exists.

Props:  A canvass on a stand.  It can be white poster board (A half sheet) on a music stand if you have nothing else.

(Scene opens as an artist pretends to be painting.)

Man:  (Walking by and stopping to see what the artist is doing)  So...let me guess...you are painting...A POLAR BEAR IN A SNOW STORM!  (Laughing at his own joke)

Artist:  (Ignoring the bad humor)  Not quite.

Man:  Well, is it...the inside of a coconut?

Artist:  You mean you don't know what this is?

Man:  It is NOTHING!  I don't see a thing!

Artist:  Look more closely.  Now what do you see.

Man:  More nothing?

Artist:  Goodness no, it is my portrait of God.

Man:  You can't be serious, there is nothing on the canvass.

Artist:  I can see Him.  He is everywhere and He is right here.

Man:  (Looking around trying to see where God might be hiding) Have you lost your mind?  Uh oh, are those paint fumes getting to you?  You have painted nothing and that is NOT God!

Artist:  Let me ask you this.  Have you ever seen your heart?

Man:  I have seen a picture of one.

Artist:  But not your own.

Man:  I guess not.  Well, no...not at all.

Artist.  You and I know it is there, you feel it beating, you know it is keeping you alive, you know it was there when you were born and will be there when you die.  It is always there.  But, you have NEVER seen it!

Man:  (Looking perplexed)  And your point is...

Artist:  God is the same way...I know He is there, I can feel Him inside of me because I know His Son, He is keeping me alive, He was with me when I was born and will be with me when I die...even AFTER I die!  Yet, I have NEVER seen Him!

Man:  (With a stone face, slowly looking toward the canvass...face slowly warming to the truth)  I...I think I see something.  (Artist smiling)  I think I do see God!

Artist:  I knew you would see!  On the canvass, right?

Man:  Yes, and in you.

Study Questions

Have you ever had to prove the existence of God?  Could you return that question with...Can you prove God does NOT exist?  Is your life Christ-centered to the point that people can see Him in you?

Break up into small groups and give them only a few minutes to come up with as many things as they can that they have never seen, but know they exist (Like their heart).  The group with the most answers after the time is up wins.  Discuss which answers would work best to break into a conversation for witnessing to a lost person.
